AIM-listed Eland Oil & Gas, an oil and gas production and development company operating in West Africa with an initial focus on Nigeria, has signed a rig contract with KCA Deutag for the T-57 land rig to workover the Ubima-1 well. Ubima-1 is located on the Ubima field, onshore Niger Delta in the Northern part of Rivers State, in which Eland has a 40% interest.

Amnesty International has accused Shell and Eni of being negligent regarding oil spills in the Niger Delta—a veritable disaster site after decades of spills, sabotages, and oil theft. The organization said the oil companies have been slow in responding to spill reports, issuing “misleading information about the cause and severity of spills, which may result in communities not receiving compensation”.

  AIM-listed LEKOIL has announced that its joint venture with Green Energy International Limited (‘GEIL’) has signed a contract with Sinopec Changjiang Engineering Services to acquire 197 sq km of 3D seismic data at the Otakikpo Marginal Field in OML 11, onshore and offshore in the south-eastern part of the Niger Delta, to update the existing 2D coverage.

Shell’s Nigerian subsidiary has committed US$1 billion for the development of the Niger Delta, the Vice President of the federal government, Yemi Osinbajo, said. Osinbajo is on a tour in the Delta, aiming to appease through dialogue the militant groups that have crippled Nigeria’s oil industry over the last couple of years.
