Mozambique Renewables: Phanes group builds solar power plants in Niassa

The Dubai-based Phanes group is to build three photovoltaic plants to supply electricity to areas of Niassa province in northern Mozambique under a memorandum of understanding to be signed on Tuesday, local officials said.

The memorandum to be signed with the provincial government includes the construction of solar plants in Lichinga, the provincial capital, with a capacity of 100 megawatts and in the districts of Mandimba and Marrupa, with 50 megawatts each.

The Mozambican press reported that the sites for the installation of the solar panels should be chosen in the coming weeks, and this project will cost 170 million euros.

The electricity to be produced will be channeled into the distribution network of Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM), although this depends on the reception and transformation capacity of the substations of the public company.

The first large solar power plant in Mozambique is due to go into operation in early 2019 and is being built on a 126-hectare site in Mocuba, in central Zambezia province. (source: Macauhub
