Africa Oil & Gas: BP’s oil field in Angola reaches 500 million barrels of oil

British Petroleum Angola (BP Angola), which has been in Angola since the 1970s, has announced that the Grande Plutonio production field, located in Block 18 in Angola’s offshore, reached a new production milestone of 500 million barrels of oil, daily newspaper Jornal de Angola reported.

With 5,000 square kilometres and a water depth ranging between 1,200 and 1,600 metres, Grande Plutonio with an approximate gross production of 160,000 barrels of oil per day, is shared equally by Sonangol Sinopec International and BP Angola .

The Grande Plutonio (Great Plutonium) field, which became operational in October 2007, is 310 metres long, has a storage capacity of 1.77 million barrels, 24 production wells, 22 active water and three gas injection wells and an installed production capacity of 144,000 barrels of oil per day.

Grande Plutonio was the first field operated by BP in Angola and consists of five distinct fields discovered between 1999 and 2001: Gálio, Crómio, Paládio, Plutónio and Cobalto.

Angola is one of BP’s key regions for research and development of oil and gas and an essential part of the company’s activity in exploration and production in deep waters.

In 2015, the net production of BP Angola accounted for approximately 19% of total net oil production of BP worldwide, excluding Russia’s Rosneft.

BP in Angola has interests in eight blocks in deep and ultra-deep waters.

BP is one of the largest foreign investors in Angola, with over US$29 billion invested by the end of 2015.

In 2015 total net production of the main fields of BP in Angola was 221,000 barrels of oil per day. (source: macauhub/ao)
