Africa Logistics: Workers strike ends, allowing Zambia–Tanzania railway line to reopen

The railway between Zambia and Tanzania used to export copper from Africa’s two biggest producers reopened on Friday after workers on both sides of the border ended a strike, a company spokesman said.

“The suspension of operations has now been lifted and all train operations have resumed with immediate effect,” company spokesperson Conrad Simuchile said in a statement.

The stoppage ended after a ruling by the High Court of Tanzania’s labour division, which declared the strike by the unionized workers of the TAZARA line in Tanzania as unlawful.

The TAZARA line is a key route for copper exports through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam from Zambia and Africa’s biggest producer, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much of the copper from both countries is also moved by road.
