Mozambique Energy: Over 15 million people in Mozambique have no access to electricity

Around 10.2 million Mozambicans have access to electricity in their homes as a result of expansion of the power grid over the last 10 years, said the country´s Energy Minister Salvador Namburete. However, another 15 million Mozambicans still had no access to electricity.
Energy Minister Salvador Namburete said that 6.5 million people were linked to the national grid of state power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and that the remaining 3.7 million received power from solar panels.
Namburete noted that these figures showed that Mozambique’s rate of electrification now stood at 40 percent compared to 7 percent in 2004.
The minister added that since 2005 70 district capitals had received electricity in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Tete, Zambézia, Sofala, Inhambane, Gaza and Manica and that by December another seven would get a power supply. (macauhub/MZ)
